Community Action Days

Knocking on doors in Totnes and Dartmouth

“By working together we can make the South Hams a cleaner, safer and healthier place to live - for everybody.”

Residents in Totnes and Dartmouth received a knock on their door on Thursday, 28th February and Friday 29th February as Community Action days got underway

Eleven members of staff from Tor Homes teamed up with Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire Service, The Guinness Trust and South Hams District Council.

They called on people living in Bridgetown, Totnes and Townstal, Dartmouth, to find out about the community issues they feel are important to them.

People were able to drop in to their local community centres to speak to representatives from the Police, Fire and environmental health about issues which concern them.

Julie Bingham, Tenancy Enforcement Manager for Tor Homes said: “We are pleased to be involved in these Community Action Days. It’s a real opportunity for local people to get involved in their community and help influence what happens in their area.”

Tor Homes staff were able to give information on such things as how to get on the waiting list, shared ownership, repairs and anti-social behaviour.

Officers were on hand to offer advice and take action on issues including safety in the home, fire prevention, anti-social behaviour, dog fouling or illegal waste dumping. Also, residents were asked about the community issues they feel are important to them and what more can be done to make their community a safer and happier place.

As many issues as possible were dealt with on the day. If a problem could not be resolved ‘on the spot’ then officers took details and arranged for a revisit to tackle the issue at a later date.

A spokesperson for the partnership said that this had been "an ideal opportunity for members of the public to meet local policeman, fire safety officers or council officers and express their views on what they think will make their community a better place to live in.”
