Ellen saves the day

Edna Tate, 86 years old, a tenant of a sheltered housing scheme in Totnes, was rescued from her smoke-filled flat by scheme co-ordinator, Ellen Kirkbride.

Ellen KirkbrideEdna suffered slight burns to her fingers in a fire when she tried to move a smouldering wooden chopping board.

The smoke triggered off the fire alarm which went directly through to Call24Hour. This is Tor Homes' alarm monitoring service which provides round the clock cover to people all over Devon and Cornwall. Call24Hour immediately called the Fire Brigade. At the same time, the alarm alerted Home Meadow’s Scheme Co-ordinator, Ellen Kirkbride, who helped the elderly lady from the smoke-filled flat.

Mrs. Tate returned to her flat later that day, as it had been cleared of smoke and Tor Homes's staff called on her regularly to check that she was ok. Ellen suffered some smoke inhalation.

Typically modest, Ellen said: It’s my job, that’s what I do.”

David Norman, Operations Director for Tor Homes said: “We are pleased that Mrs. Tate was able to go back to her flat on Saturday evening. The fire alarm system triggered a call through to our round the clock alarm monitoring service, Call24Hour and the fire brigade was alerted immediately. Our Scheme Co-ordinators do a great job and we are all very proud of Ellen.”
